Italy

I want to go there and live wondering about life for the rest of it. It’s not really a dream when you don’t just wish for but want it. And, I want to sink myself with the meanings to life given to our planet by mankind.

In Italy.

Why Italy? Why not stay faithful to your country right where you were born? And, why Italy? Because, I don’t know if the real sense of being an Indian is to stay here or even that of being a man of art is to be in Italy. But, I know it talks to live in harmony. Pity borders defined by the British lawyers who barely knew this country won’t stop a man from living his dreams. But, they do delay my journey as my fellow travelers have been delayed by their borders.

I don’t want to talk about what I want to do in Italy. Mostly, because I don’t know for myself. Knowing what happens in a dream is not what I sleep into. As the free world would want it, I’ll let the moment decide when my feet set on the magic-land.

It is a dream. And, why Italy?

Nokia and it’s iconic hand gesture

You recognise that tone, don’t you? In any case you are not familiar to which tone I am referring here, it’s the legendary piano version of Gran Vals. Originally, before the ringtone came out – Gran Vals is composed by the Spanish guitarist Francisco Tárrega in 1902 which would later be used by Nokia. When the Finland based company released this tone with their devices for the first time, it would be recognised as the first ringtone which was of its kind on a mobile phone – with a catch to it. Coming from a classical composition, the modern devices which we use now have their ancestral tones ending backwards at the beginning of it all – Grande Valse, as Nokia would call it in 1994.

As an epic story the ringtone would have, the boot-up screen when Nokia phones were turned on – is literally speaking about their tagline “Connecting People.” It is a woman and a kid touching their hands as if to signify this connection between such extreme ages is what the message would look like when using their devices. A pseudo hard turning out to be smooth, as real as possible. It worked like a charm.

I am not sure if the original idea for hands touching each other, like the one for Grande Valse, is a part of the history. But, we do have the fresco painting by the Italian artist Michelangelo – which shows the touch of the divine and the first man.

I am wondered by what art can do to the genesis of anything in this universe, an idea or a ringtone. Art, by it’s own nature, seems to defy itself when it turns to the norms one might think of. A few weeks ago, I created a work-piece of my own combing the very humane hands of Nokia and the divinely stories of Michelangelo, mostly without knowing much about any of the two. You can check it here, on my Instagram by clicking on the link.

Wash your hands regularly. You might not get in touch with the divine, you might just high-five the devil chigga.

LEARNING DATA VISUALISATION TO EXPLORE COVID-19

The beginning paragraphs do not speak about data-visualisation even with the tones of sarcasm. If you are here only for the data visualisation, you can skip to the paragraphs which start after the separator below.

My primary goal in life (as of now) is to try and learn as many skills in Computer Science as possible before I finish college, to find a job in the same field. Because, the harshest truth I have faced in my life is the saddening potential in unconventional jobs for them to be financially safe. They are considered different for a reason. This does not mean I would consider anything related to my college to be ordinary. It might be true to the majority of dropouts, and I get that understanding quite vividly. I would be failing myself if I did as the majority would do when the system fails them. Because, considering college (or anything) as something ordinary/stupid just because you don’t like the normal is pretty much the single most intersection between a person and normality itself. Plus, I have always wanted to code.

This helps me in keeping up with the ones I need to be comparing myself to, for better outcomes a college education might have. After losing an academic year, I have learnt the art of comparing myself to others. It is quite simple. I do it regularly to myself the day before or the week before. Plus, to feel extremely better, just for the sake of it – the year before. This has proven to be progressive and positive regarding whatever the element of career competency one might consider.

If you see my Instagram, you will know that I love visuals and the message a visual can give. It was never my motive to work with visuals when I started to write screenplays, but the underlying fact that visuals are better than words has proved itself better for my creative process and also the screenplays. So, on my way to earn some certificates in Data Visualisation – I am also bettering my understanding of films and their making.

Remember, this won’t be as interesting as regular when I consider my original audience who like to read stories more than Computer Science terminologies. So, I will try to include as much of stupidity and love as possible. Let’s get right into the realm of amazing visuals, more like axial syllables!

Legend says that one can forgive a person for such rhymes.

That’s a separator. Awesome, let’s begin with the fact that I don’t know much about data-visualisation. So, consider this article only for dummies like me.

Note: If you find difficulty in understanding the images on your phone, try using a bigger screen. Otherwise, you can also open the images in a new tab.

ABOUT OUR DATA

John Hopkins School of Public Health has been updating the number of cases (confirmed, dead, recovered) along with other such related information (country/region, minimal description about the patient) on their data-set published to the online community of researchers looking for patterns in the outbreak, or even solutions to approach this virus. You too can have a look at this data-set by clicking here. It includes an interactive map as shown below.

Bigger the bubble, higher the number of confirmed cases in that region

SOURCE: JHU CSSE

The bubble for India might look small, but that number is 332. You can compare it to other bubbles nearby. For example, the one in Pakistan is representing a total of 773 confirmed cases, but a very slight increase in the size of the bubble. This is because of the scale being global.

We can barely see the bubbles of Nepal, Ethiopia and other poorly populated countries. Since the population is low, the combined foreign touch these countries might have had is drastically lower than that of India – hence, the virus resides in a smaller fraction in such countries. This hypothesis on foreign touch, can be furthermore confirmed looking at the map below:

Many of us don’t even know the names of these African countries

WHAT I UNDERSTOOD

It is safe to say that the outbreak is increasing at a very high rate. It has been only two months since the virus became famous and the first confirmed case in India was reported on January 30th. In a period of only fifty days, you can see the increase in the outbreak in India:

Day 1 is January 22nd

Plots for a few other countries:

China Region
Pakistan
Nepal
My dream country, Italy

Italy, has unfortunately had the worst hit in confirmed cases based on the area of a country. Also, in the number of deaths. Italy, which I personally consider as the most beautiful country, was bound to have many travelers not just from around the world – but mainly the tourists in Europe.

The most interesting plot I could find was the one for Fiji. A country near Australia with over 300 islands. It is a beautiful tourist spot by the looks of it’s landscapes. Only, less traveled to. It recorded a second case just two days back.

Fiji

I have completed the chapter on Line Plots, the most basic plot one can start with. So, for today we can say the virus is pretty quick at spreading itself and also that you need to stay at home. I have stayed at home for quite a remarkable time now, wishing to continue doing the same.

It is crucial that we all come together in flattening the curve and face this with an individual perspective when maintaining the social-distance. Learn to say no now, better than ever. Wash your hands like they could have the virus sleeping on them. And, know that viruses are barely a living entity. They just exist and replicate themselves unlike other living beings who also have to learn about viruses to survive.

#FlattenTheCurve

I am also doing a course on Natural Language Processing to try and contribute to CORD-19. About which, I highly doubt there will be any contribution at all considering my projects at college. Please share this article with your friends and family who’d like to create a reading habit while the holidays last. Happy reading!

My favourite source so far in getting to know about COVID-19: this video.

My previous post: Since ciphers sense stinkers!

SINCE CIPHERS SENSE STINKERS

It has been a calculable time since I did this and yet it feels the same. I sit down at my chair in a room (mostly) done by me. Then, I set up my space pushing away the books, papers, pens, wrappers, even bananas and empty glasses of water on my desk so that I can write. I put on the music, preferably anything which does not have any obvious meaning to it. Meaning, no words of a language I already know or even better – no words at all. You see I like music in the way it leaves me with infinite stories. All of these possibilities concur at a single point of belief where meaning need not exist. This arrangement of a sea of chances on a single piece of hope is very much like our planet. The one we all are destroying.

Welcome to the progressive growth this blog is bound to be a part of. Now, I write.

NOT BHUMI

I have received many messages in my life. And not just on WhatsApp, but even in the form of letters, mails and human voices. In all of these messages, there is a common point of understanding. These messages could be different and even irrelevant to each other. Yet, they all look the same when I see them just as what they are. Before you dig any deeper and misunderstand what I might have meant, please pause. Because, what I mean by messages is not the conclusion of them being a formulaic sense of communication, or the communication itself but the literal meaning of them being ultimately just a message. A set of letters or an arrangement of these sets at the best. You might think of it (plainly) as a poorly exciting way of looking at life in general. I differ, because I am sure that stories get much more exciting after they are received with no former understanding before. It is always a better option for me to not have such former understandings at all in the first place to come what may. They ruin many elements which matter to the experience I am having or might have later. And, it is by experience I hold such views.

I prefer to journal matters of my life either after they are done being experienced or well before they begin. A few don’t begin while some never stop being. This sole conundrum allows me to maintain a dumber violation of my choices just in case I do journal any of it while it happens.

CREATIVITY CAN’T BEGIN

Precisely speaking, there’s very little to add in the bucket of changes my life has had since the last time I wrote on this blog. Not to forget, it still is a calculable time. I still attend college, waste a lot of money, spend humanitarian times with fellow humans and try to do something creative every day. The last thing I do in the sentence before this one, is the only part that can be said to have changes in the way I do it constantly.

MY CITY HUBBALLI

Time and again, it is the creative aspect of my life where I see evidence. Evidence for it to work every single time. I make an edit, it works. I write a program, it works most of the times. I make a video, it works. I make anything, it potentially has already worked itself out before it even exists. That’s the comforting part of creativity to me. Ever since I got the taste of it’s outcomes in a palpable way. I know that inventive thinking gets me to the places of peace and harmony. It brings in a kind of relief only I’d know how to put into words. A few of the times that I try to express this relief, I don’t regularly have the form of language to put forth my understanding. Usually during such times, rarely do I have the wishes to even voice the courteous experience I might have had.

I believe it is not in the list of right choices to see creativity as one entity. Or, as an entity at all. It does not have a defined meaning which remains the same throughout. Painting a portrait of Mona Lisa, I believe, is just as much creative as joining two points on a paper. It is our humane pity little mind that would consider such comparison as an insult towards the painter. The painter mostly knows that this human came up with only one way to join the two points. A straight line. Hardly, this human might have thought of two ways while he or she was busy building up the hate towards such comparison. When triggered of this fault in the human, the human ceases to be.

BACK

It simply can’t begin anywhere for it has no certain form of existence. Creativity is not modest enough to fall for the notions defined by a modest being, the human. It can’t simply “be” to me. Progressively, it is moving in every direction imaginable.

HEADED FOR THE WRONG DIRECTIONS

When I tripped to Marasanige, a village with hardly more than ten houses to count, I happened to be closer with this planet. I have always been close to it. I faced this nature of the planet where observing every move it makes from within, connects the observer instantly. Because, we are a part of this planet unlike the famous notions where the planet belongs to us. It may be true that Earth does not depend on us entirely to exist, but since it does not have a language direct enough to tell us how badly we are treating it – it burns at a speed unimaginable. It will exist, but we won’t be here when the time to survive reaches our doors.

GHALI GUDDA

The problem with solving climate-change, as beautifully explained by Anthony Leiserowitz, is it’s invisibility. For example, we can’t see the damage being done to the climate when on the road. If the gas coming out of every vehicle was presented in a more visual form, we would have dealt with this problem a long time ago. Moreover, we feel like it is a distant problem which the future generations will face. It might be true but it’s not. Looking at earth’s timeline, it ages nearly 4.5 billion years. Does 2100 seem as something distant from 2020 when we know that it is more than billions of years after the earth was born. I think our planet won’t even have to worry about humans. It will remain. I have realized that the concern in reality is subjective to “save the planet for us” rather than the famous perception of climate-change being just “save the planet”.

It is a very tricky problem indeed. Feeling guilty about the damage we’ve done to our planet won’t bring us the solutions. And, so does not being scared of what is to come. We will solve it, looking at the history for most of the problems faced by humanity – it is better to remain optimistic. Even if this optimism is highly polarized, it might just work.

A FLOWER?

I am excited to do more for this blog. Also, I have a lot more in store to work on. Publishing all of these works over the internet will take their own time. In the mean time, I will be working on one article every month from here on. A single post for the whole month will make it worth the wait plus the content, I believe. For this to work progressively, I will need your support in keeping this blog a busy place even when I am not here. You can make this happen by making your loved ones read my blog. Thank you!
